The natural world
what is nature?
nature, in the broadest sense, is the natural, physical, or material world or universe.
Within the various uses of the word today, "nature" often refers to geology and wildlife. Nature can refer to the general realm of living plants and animals, and in some cases to the processes associated with inanimate objects – the way that particular types of things exist and change of their own accord, such as the weather and geology of the Earth.

Why i chose the natural world?
I decided too choose the natural world because there are endless ideas on what the natural world actually is and so many possible ideas on what you can take photos of.Usually when i take photos that are not on our course they are based around the idea of nature , i prefer photos of flowers and just natural scenery, I find it to be one of the most interesting topics. I think that it will be really interesting to experiment with all aspects of nature.
These are my first photos taken for my project 'the natural world'. I took them going around my school and i captured them using my phone which is an i phone6. I prefer the photos i took of the trees mainly because i took them at different/difficult angles making the photo more interesting /confusing to understand how its taken and what it actually is.

These are photos i took in Spain this year ,2016, i went to alacante in the summer holidays and i took these photos one day on the beach.I really like these photo because too me it just represent summer in a few photos, i have added these specifically into my 'natural world project' because in every photo it contains some sort of plants or the ocean which are intact parts of nature and are no man made. It would be even better if i focused on just the natural parts up close because in some photos i can notice some man-made buildings or fences. So next time i want to concentrate more on just getting 'the natural world' in the photos.
To help myself understand what the natural world is and too help myself on how to photograph it i decided to draw a mind map.
5 natural world artists.
1.Anna Atkins, (16 March 1799 – 9 June 1871) was an English botanist and photographer. She is often considered the first person to publish a book illustrated with photographic images. Some sources claim that she was the first woman to create a photograph.
2.Karl Blossfeldt (June 13, 1865 – December 9, 1932) was a German photographer, sculptor, teacher, and artist who worked in Berlin, Germany. He is best known for his close-up photographs of plants and living things, published in 1929 as, Urformen der Kunst. He was inspired, as was his father, by nature and the way in which plants grow. He believed that 'the plant must be valued as a totally artistic and architectural structure.'
3.Edward Henry Weston (March 24, 1886 – January 1, 1958) was a 20th-century American photographer. He has been called "one of the most innovative and influential American photographers…and "one of the masters of 20th century photography."Over the course of his 40-year career Weston photographed an increasingly expansive set of subjects, including landscapes, still lifes, nudes, portraits, genre scenes and even whimsical parodies.
4.Born in Bristol, England, in 1950, photographer Jem Southam describes himself as a product of postwar optimism and Cold War paranoia. Shaped by these cultural forces, together with the vestiges of English romanticism and west country non-conformism, his serial work has slowly taken form over the past twenty years.
5.Olivia Parker. After graduating from Wellesley College in 1963 with a degree in the History of Art, Olivia Parker began her career as a painter, and became involved in photography in 1970. Mostly self taught in photography she usually constructs what she photographs in the studio.

This is a photograph taken by jem southam. I really quite enjoy this photo mainly because when you speak about nature and the world , you think of a lovely and beautiful thing but this photo (which was taken by Jem southam) shows how bad nature can actually be.The sky is grey and foggy, all the grass and tree and other plants are no longer green , they are a now brownish colour.Everything seems too be dying and this intrests me because usually people only capture the lovely and bright side of nature.

From looking at other artists work i have realised i have too look at everything from a different angle. photographer's think about what they are taking photos off , how they are taking it , are they taking it off anything for specific like is there a specific reason they just captured that certain object in there photo or was it just for no reason?.
so from now on when i take photos i will take them from a different perspective and see if my photos come out different but interesting.

Karl Blossfeldt
He was inspired, as was his father, by nature and the way in which plants grow. He believed that 'the plant must be valued as a totally artistic and architectural structure.Blossfeldt made many of his photographs with a home-made camera that could magnify the subject up to thirty times its size, revealing details within a plant's natural structure. Appointed for a teaching post at the Institute of Royal Arts Museum in 1898 (where he remained until 1930), he established an archive for his photographs.

Dafna talmor.
Most information is off of Dafna Talmor's website , i did not write it personally myself only small parts off it.
Who is Dafna Talmor?

On the 19th of october the artist/photographer Dafna Talmor is visiting our school (Thomas Tallis). We will have a 3 hour workshop with her making constructive landscapes and afterwards will then display them with a projecter.
I have noticed that Dafna Talmor has a continuous theme of nature through ought her photos, but they all have a little twist towards them, for example all of her photos look like they are paintings, this makes her photos unique and creative.
Here are some of my favourite photos of dafna talmors. These are my favourite photos of hers simply because they look like drawings/paintings, its just a lovely effect on the photos and i also love the random burst of colours it has in the centre of the photos.I would personally like to take photos similar too hers but it could be quite difficult.

Dafna Talmor gave us the pleasure off visiting our photography class at school, we had a 3 hour workshop making photos similar too hers. She gave us tiny little photos which we had too completely destroy , by destroy i mean draw, paint, cut, stick, rip ,do possibly anything too these photos to see what the outcome would be like it could be nice or it could be horrible but you wouldn't know because how are you supposed to know what nice or horrible is ? everything is considered art , how are you meant too define nice? or horrible? especially on a image which you was supposed too destroy in the first place.
Here are some off my photos that i have created during our workshop with dafna.

I personally prefer the first one because you can see what the original photo is , which is a stream surrendered by some scenery. There are random splurges of paint which i had specifically splattered on randomly by flicking a paintbrush with paint on it.It could be better if added some more stuff to it because it is a tad boring, too make it more multicoloured i could add a massive splurdge of colour , or cut out certain parts of the image.
On the other hand i do not personally like the second one i had made..In my opinion it looks a bit dull and boring. This photo was a complete mistake i split orange paint over parts of it ,and i decided to paint more random colours on it aswell. One thing looks nice in this photo and that this is the blue colour around the bottom, the paint ran down a little bit and turned into a darker colour blue. These colours in my opinion look very nice and give the photo a cool effect.

Final piece.
These are photos i have taken using a dslr camera in and around my school.I have taken two photos of my friends which are also students , mainly just for the shape and outline of their face.I am hoping to use photoshop and edit my natural world photos into the photos of the students. These are only a few of the natural world photographs that i will use.
|
Here is a step-by-step process on how to put my natural world photography into my photos of the students.
1.you upload the photo of the person you are using.. 2.upload your second photo of the natural world and highlight the whole image and copy it. 3.Go back too the first image of the person and select just them, not the background or anything else, just the person. 4.Afterwards you click on 'edit' and you go onto paste as if you was going to paste the natural world photograph into the person but you click on 'paste into'. 5.Both of the photos will then be combined and you are able to move the photo inside the person too wherever you like. |
These are some of my final images, i have used two of my friends/students too take photos of and i have used natural photos that i have taken throughought my natural world course.I quite enjoy a few of these images due to the bursts of colour giving the photos a certain effect , grasping the viewers attention.Specific colours go well with other colours for example my favourite one is the outline of a boy, which a green leaf background and inside of him , and there is a light pink colour with a spray painted effect , this is my favourite because I think these colours put together help each other to stand out and brighten up the view on the natural world altogether.
I was not entierally pleased with my final outcomes so i decided to go back onto photoshop, refine and improve on my photos and done the same sort of style photos.I took some more photos of different students in my class and took different photos based around the topic of the 'natural world'.I used nearly the same technique to get my new and improved photos which i am completely happy with , and i like them a lot more because you are able to see the students faces clearly even though there is a completely different photo merged over them.
these are the normal photos compared to the finished outcome..
Unit 1, final examination
I began this project by researching a variety of artists and photographers whose work expressed the themes of ‘the natural world’, ‘Abstraction’ and ‘Street photography’ for example, one artist I have take an extreme to liking because I really enjoy his work is Karl Blossfeldt, I particularly responded to the work of Karl Blossfeldt, because he bases his work around nature. His photos are very simple yet they are also very creative and getting ideas from his work really helps along the lines with my latest project ‘The natural world’. The individual photograph that had the most effect on my own work was a image named “Campanula”. This specific image is a flower and I like it not because of the flower itself but because of the black and white effect on it and how much detail you can see in the photo. I mainly researched Karl Blossfedlt during my natural world project but during different projects such as street photography we studied the artist ‘Bruce Gilden’ and I am very interested in his style of photography, he takes very quick photos up close of peoples faces, which I did experiment to do myself when on the topic street photography.
I discovered all these artists on Pinterest which is a website created where users can upload, save, sort, and manage images known as pins and other media content (e.g., videos) through collections known as pin boards. Pinterest acts as a personalized media platform. Users can browse the content of others in their feed. From studying all these artists I have got a lot of inspiration on what to do my final projects on and how to style and take my photographs.
There are 3 specific themes I have enjoyed the most and they are abstraction, street photography and my latest topic, which I am still on now which is the natural world. I enjoy these topics because I am able to take a big variety of photos of them and have loads of different ideas on what I am able to do to these images. The natural world is my favorite so far because I think nature is geniuenly so pretty and the world is always changing so there is always something different to take a photo of.
